Prostate cancer can be treated with radiation therapy. More sophisticated equipment allows the use of a reasonable dose of radiation, which is then very carefully and precisely directed to the prostate. This technique is called external beam radiation therapy EBRT. External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is recommended by the international protocol NCCN Guidelines Prostate Cancer 2021
Since all organs within the body are fairly close together, the shape of the beam should be consistent with the anatomy of the prostate and surrounding areas. The beam is formed by using multi-leaf collimators in the linear accelerator head. By shaping the beam, it is possible to precisely target the prostate and reduce the dose to the healthy surrounding normal tissues of the bladder and intestines. The innovative electron-photon beam in EBRT targets cancer cells inside the prostate.
Are all external beam radiotherapy equipment the same? Of course not…
The Varian Edge System is a new generation of efficient, high power linear accelerators used for external beam radiotherapy (EBRT), installed in the world's leading hospitals.
Edge Varian is an innovative electron-photon beam, which has no alternative in Ukraine yet.
The Varian Edge is equipped with an ultra-high resolution 4D computed tomography system for added precision in EBRT. During the treatment session, continuous diagnostics is carried out - with its help, the location of the neoplasm is continuously monitored, protecting the surrounding healthy tissues and organs. This significantly increases the effectiveness of treatment, and also minimizes the risk of side effects.
The most advanced system for high-precision stereotaxic external beam radiation therapy EBRT (External Beam Radiation Therapy) - EDGE Varian 2018 has been installed at the Institute of Clinical Medicine in Georgia.
