What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at eliminating the deformation of the external nose.

This operation can be performed not only for aesthetic reasons, but also in the form of post-traumatic reconstruction of the external nose. The operation is performed to restore the function of nasal breathing and the appearance of the nose (together with septoplasty and, if necessary, endoscopic revision of the paranasal sinuses)

Types of Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty can be performed as a closed access (without external skin incisions), and open access (with a small skin incision under the nose, which is noticeable no more than 1 month after surgery). The choice of access is determined by the surgeon individually for medical reasons and taking into account the wishes of the patient.

What is needed for recording on rhinoplasty?

To register a patient for surgery, an initiation visit is necessary - the first visit to the doctor, during which the patient must be explained the course of the operation and the features of the postoperative period, computer modeling of the face in face and profile is performed in order to maximize the patient's wishes.

How is rhinoplasty surgery performed?

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia. The operation time is from 1.5 to 3 hours. At the end of the operation, the patient is injected with silicone splints or tampons from medical synthetic material (as an absorbent sponge) up to 10 cm long in the nasal cavity. Removal of tampons (2-4th day), as well as replacement of the gypsum dressing (6-8th day), is performed under anesthesia (neuroleptanalgesia).

The period after rhinoplasty surgery

The early postoperative period (up to 1-2 days) the patient is in the clinic. In this case, we can more smoothly "smooth out" the postoperative period (eliminate pain, nausea, significantly reduce swelling, etc.). During this period, most drugs are injected into a vein, which significantly reduces the pain of administration. Within 3-4 days, the patient may experience swelling of the eyelids. Hematomas (bruises) are formed quite rarely. We usually recommend lubrication of the eyelids with venotonic drugs (gel, ointment). On the 6-8th day after the operation, we replace the plaster cast. In this case, the patient has the opportunity to see his nose (to evaluate the changes that were achieved as a result of the operation). And although the nose (especially the tip), still remains somewhat swollen, all the wishes are already embodied and are easily “read”. The newly applied plaster cast is kept on the nose for another 4-5 days to improve the fixation of bone fragments. If the operation was performed only on the cartilaginous part of the nose - without an osteotomy, then the plaster cast is kept for no more than 5 days - during this time the skin mobilized during the operation manages to be re-fixed to the back of the nose. On the 11th day, the plaster cast is completely removed (in some cases, with a strong preoperative curvature of the nasal bridge, it is replaced with a plaster for 3 days), and the sutures on the skin are also removed.

Limitations and recommendations after rhinoplasty

The patient receives recommendations on nutrition, the possibilities of physical exertion, on the care of the nasal cavity and skin and can go to work. During the first months after the operation, it is necessary to go to the clinic (at least 1 time per month) for examination in order to exclude the formation of synechiae (postoperative adhesions in the nasal cavity that worsen nasal breathing). Sometimes in the period of 1-3 months after rhinoplasty the patient is prescribed physical procedures, which he can go through at the place of residence. Edema practically disappears within 2 weeks, and the patient can return to an active life and work. The restrictions apply only to heavy physical exertion and eating salty foods. You also need to control the amount of fluid you drink. After 4-6 months, an expert assessment of the achieved results is carried out.

Correction of the nose after rhinoplasty

In the case of identifying eliminated defects, some of which are planned (for example, the difference in the shape of the nostrils in a patient with a significant curvature of the nasal bridge), surgical correction can be performed after 4 months. This is a small operation, which is often performed on an outpatient basis, does not require hospitalization and special recommendations. Sutures after it are removed on the 7th day. There is no postoperative edema.
