What is septoplasty?

Septoplasty is an operation to restore a curved nasal septum.

This operation is indicated for violations of nasal breathing. Surgery can be combined with rhinoplasty surgery - correction of the shape of the nose. Curvature of the nasal septum can be congenital, sometimes it occurs as a result of trauma. This pathology may not cause any inconvenience - many people often are unaware of its presence. However, in some cases, curvature leads to health problems.

The need to restore the septum occurs when breathing is difficult through the nose. This leads to various pathologies that are associated with the provision of oxygen in human organs, including increased blood pressure, severe fatigue, headaches, and common colds.

Among the medical indications for surgery are symptoms such as:

  • snoring in a dream;
  • frequent nosebleeds;
  • migraine;
  • periodically arising sinusitis, rhinitis.

Intervention can significantly improve the quality of life, restoring the ability to breathe normally through the nose. Sometimes facial features also slightly change - the nose becomes more symmetrical.

How to choose a plastic surgeon?

If you need septoplasty of the nasal septum, the cost of surgery should not be a determining factor in choosing a plastic surgeon. Much more important is the qualification and experience of a specialist, on which the success of the intervention depends. The operation is performed under local anesthesia. Usually applied anesthesia, which involves the introduction of nasal passages soaked with an anesthetic drug applicators. General anesthesia is rarely used.

Patients' fears about the appearance of scars on the nose are unfounded - the surgeon performs the operation through the nostrils, therefore there are no visible scars. The specialist separates the mucous membrane from the septum and removes the curved cartilage and bones. After this, stitches are applied, tampons are inserted into the nose to stop bleeding, and the nose is covered with a bandage outside.

The duration of the operation is from thirty minutes to two hours. If septoplasty is combined with correction of the shape of the nose, then the duration may increase. At the preliminary consultation, the plastic surgeon will assess the condition of the tissues, decide how the surgery will be performed

The operation is usually easily tolerated, although the need to breathe through the mouth gives patients temporary discomfort.

Rehabilitation after surgery

Full rehabilitation takes no more than a month, but improvement in nasal breathing is observed two weeks after nasal septoplasty. It is necessary to abandon thermal procedures and physical activity until complete recovery, and also follow all the doctor's recommendations after surgery, cleanse the nasal cavity from crusts and lubricate the mucosa so that it does not dry out.
